We're going to miss you!

On Friday, July 30th at 7:00 pm join us in whooping it up for April!  She’s leaving us.. and Prescott and we want to show her our appreciation for all the awesome work she has done for us over the last 10 years. She has unselfishly been providing us with her unique western charm for all these years, and now its time for us to honor her! So come on down to the Jersey and raise a glass and toast April with us!  Its sure to be a fun evening as Little Larry & the Drive will provide the music to ‘Shake the Shack’ starting at 8:00 pm till midnight.

Lillie Langtry (née Emilie Charlotte Le Breton, nicknamed the Jersey Lily) (13 October 1853 – 12 February 1929) was a British actress born on the island of Jersey in 1853. Her father was the Dean of Jersey.

Lillie married Irish landowner Edward Langtry in 1874. Some say that the attraction to Edward was because of his yacht and that he insisted he take her away from Jersey and set up home in London. Lillie did not begin her stage career until several years later after her husband had become bankrupt. She also had a daughter who was born in 1881, Jeanne Marie Langtry (who married Sir Ian Malcolm of Poltalloch in 1902, had four children, and died in 1964), and whose father was definitely not Lillie’s husband. The child’s actual father was reportedly Lillie Langtry’s lover Prince Louis of Battenberg (later 1st Marquess of Milford Haven, 1854-1921), who married Queen Victoria’s granddaughter Princess Victoria of Hesse and the Rhine in 1884 and became father of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, the last Viceroy of India, and grandfather of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. A recent biography of Langtry suggests that another of her lovers, Arthur Jones, may have been Jeanne Marie’s father, though Prince Louis’s son, Lord Mountbatten, always maintained that his father was the one.

Lillie’s heyday as a society beauty culminated in her becoming a semi-official mistress to the Prince of Wales, Queen Victoria’s son Albert Edward (“Bertie”), the future king Edward VII. Other lovers included wealthy Britons Robert Peel and George Baird. Among her friends were the Irish writer Oscar Wilde and the American artist James McNeill Whistler. She was for a time the manager of the Imperial Theatre and also manufactured claret at her 4,200 acre (17 km²) winery in Lake County (northern) California, which she purchased in 1888 and sold in 1906.

In 1887 Lillie became an American citizen, and divorced her husband the same year in California. In 1899, she married the much younger Hugo Gerald de Bathe, who would inherit a baronetcy, and became a leading owner in the horse-racing world, before retiring to Monte Carlo. She died there in 1929, and was buried in the graveyard of St. Saviour’s Church in Jersey – the church of which her father had been rector.

We’re loosing April after 10 years of Service to the Jersey Lilly Saloon. It’s been a real fun ride with her all this time and we’re sure going to miss her! Finding someone to fill those boots of hers is going to be tough one. But one thing for sure.. the door is always open for her if she ever has the mind to come back to Prescott. So make sure you stop in on a Friday or Saturday night on or before July 30th and say goodbye to April before she heads down the hill.

Ted yearned to recapture the magic of the days past, and what better place than the Historic Palace Building. Being steeped in early Arizona history, the Palace was a natural meeting spot for the citizens of Prescott. Most Ranchers, Miners, Bankers, Judges, Businessmen and Cowboys of the old days made this locale their home away from home. As you may have heard, the Palace Building had a Bordello, a Butcher shop, a Barbershop, Chinese Laundry and a Restaurant. The original blueprints made in 1900 for the first owners Brow and Belcher, clearly showed all of these elements.

Having a successful mining operation in Idaho, Ted parlayed the sale of the mine into the purchase of the Palace Building in 1993. He had a vision of refurbishing this Historic building into a top notch Saloon. He had his work cut out for him as the upstairs of the Palace was in terrible disrepair, having set empty for a decade or so.

Ted summoned his attorney and a local businessman, Marlin Kuykendall, and came up with a business plan. Prescott Architect, Doug Stroh was retained for the Design and Master plan. General Contractor, Paul Richard was hired for the restoration of the antiquated building. Besides refurbishing the Antique Bar and all of the associated woodwork in the Jersey Lilly Saloon, Ted restored the long hallway, complete with the original Transoms, Wainscot and Offices back to their original splendor. Ted then had the backside of the crumbling Historic building restored. From the leaky, old basement up to the new patio roof, the rear elevation was being brought into the 21st century. The piece de resistance was the new Cedar Deck and the Luxury Apartment, built on the alley side of the building. Sharlot Hall Museum was consulted for the Historic continuity of the design, and the unique items found during the construction were then donated to the Museum for safekeeping.

Marlin, our current mayor, was the first owner of the “Jersey Lilly Saloon.” The Grand opening was on Memorial Day 2000. The Jersey was then sold to a local businesswomen, Sherry Gagnon for a spell until it landed in the hands of the current owner, Tommy Meredith. Since 2001, Tommy has been serving up the Prescott hospitality at the Jersey Lilly Saloon in Grand Style, making the Jersey Lilly Saloon the unspoken “Hub” of Whiskey Row. The glorious Balcony, resplendent with locally mined granite columns, is a natural focal point for all of the functions on Whiskey Row.
